How the Time Machine works

Each month is recomputed from the same data and code as the live site, as of that month.

Recomputed, not archived

The pages here are recomputed today with today's data and methods. They are not what ApnaFunda published at the time; frozen monthly reports (where they exist) are linked from the month pages and are a different thing. Because the data is today's, results that were later restated appear as restated, and companies added to the data since then appear in older months.

Timing

Prices run to the last trading day on or before the last calendar day of the month, looked up company by company. Reported results are used 60 days after each period ended (the quarter-end, or the financial year-end for annual figures), because actual announcement dates are not available. A month's page uses only results with a period end at least 60 days before the first day of that month, which is conservative: a result can be public up to a month before it is used. Rank arrows compare with the same computation one month earlier.

The first month is January 2020: it is the first month with enough price history (about four months) and a year of reported results to compare with. The latest, partial month is never shown here; the home page's "Trending now" covers it.

Who is ranked

Companies with a market cap above ₹500 crore in that month, in a classified sector, with at least 80 trading days of prices by month end. The ₹500 crore floor is a nominal figure, not adjusted for index levels, so it is stricter in real terms in earlier years. A sector needs at least 5 ranked companies.

The four views

These are the same definitions as the home page's "Trending now".

Divergences, sector table and screens

Divergences use the Divergence Radar's definitions at that month: F ranks the 12-month change in EPS, ROCE and operating margin; P ranks the 6-month price change; D = F − P. Sector returns are from market-cap-weighted ApnaFunda sector indices built from today's constituents (so survivorship-biased) and are left blank while an index had fewer than 5 constituents. Screens are the Strategy Lab's presets (same names, same rules, same eligibility) evaluated at that month; "Replay this screen" opens the Lab at the same month.

What happened next

Hidden until opened. Returns are price only (no dividends) from the month-end close to the close 1, 3, 6 and 12 months later, or to the latest data when that window has not finished (the page says how many months have happened). A company that stopped trading is carried to its last close and marked, not dropped. We show the median of each list and the share of names above the ApnaFunda All index over the same window; never an average and never a portfolio curve. Names with a daily move that looks like an unadjusted split are marked and left out of the median.
